Yes, Hitler had to overrun France, otherwise that would have caused a problem. If both attacked the Soviet Union, which almost happened, the Soviets would not have had the reinforcements that fought at the battle of Moscow, because they would have been engaging the Japanese. After Russia was conquered, the Japanese would have attacked the U.S. because they couldn't stand having a large fleet to challenge them in the Pacific. I also doubt the Germans could have invaded Britain, they didn't have the warships that were critical in every allied landing of the war.
They headed to North Africa to help the Italians, I still have no idea how the British beat back their first attack, the Italians outnumbered the Brits like 6 to 1. The Germans offered to help and probably wanted to seize the oil fields which were critical to the allies and something the Germans could use. Though not too much because they would have had the Russian oilfields in the Caucuses.
