CPU Fun

Based on a conversation we had in the admin threads, i thought i'd post this here for discussion..I decided to do a test, and see how much a G-Series processor (G4/G5) stacks up to a pentium. (If anyone has amd/amd64 machines id love to see recent results). Using the www.distributed.net client, I ran a test on a number of machines:

Mobile pentium 4 3.06ghz XP

Conclusions:

Top Ranking:
1. Dual 2.0ghz G5 (28.75 Million Keys/Second)
2. Single 1.2ghz G4 (10.81 Million Keys/Second)
3. Dual 2.4ghz Xeon (2.0 + 2.1 = 4.1 Million Keys/Second)
4. Single 2.4ghz Xeon (4.51 Million Keys/Second)

okay - while we know that a g5 is fast, its still About six times faster than a xeon - dual or single (This is explained by SMP - A dual machine doesnt 'add' the cpus together to make a machine twice as fast, it handles the tasks in parallel - In the above case, you see how the dual xeon ran 2 proccesses - hence 2 results. A dual g5 can handle that one task on both cpus concurrently. this is a BIG DEAL. Your games on a dual xeon would run no better than a single p4. ut24k. battlefield, etc on our macs have access to BOTH processors as one. (feature of the bus).

My 1.2ghz G4 in my ibook - The same cpu as your average imac that people laugh at - Is over twice as powerful than a dual 2.4ghz xeon (yes, double the ghz, double the cpus - See above)

fun stuff!

Not suprising. P4 hyperthreading, for the most part, sucks goat balls.

Anyone with an AMD?

Impressive - kills a xeon. you did use the 64bit build i assume? That gives you a HUGE advantage, obviously. (Youd get the same advantages from a 64bit game build)

Nope.. WinXp 32bit installation. Would probably be more impressive with the 64bit build?? I wouldn't know and it doesn't really matter to me. I just built a machine to play games and have always had good luck with the AMD stuff.

I originally had planned to do a P4 Machine when I built this one.. However, when I built this machine.. AMD was a bit easier on my wallet over the P4 at the time. Money was the driving factor.

Um Bonez.. There is a 64bit version of XP out there.. It may be a Beta version, but I don't think so. Uncle Ho has had or has it currently on one of his AMD computers. Therefore, I know it exists.

Um Bonez.. Windows XP is available in the 64 bit platform.. It may still be in the trial stage.. but it does exist and is available to the public for free for 360 trial period.
