Good move or bad?
http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/20...icrosoft_x.htm
We were talking about it here at work. I work at a college in the IT department. One of the techs was saying it's going to cause a headache due to it opening some students' machines up.

Well I understand they want to keep piracy down, however the security problems will undoubtedly rear their ugly head.

haha I don't know how seriously to take this...after all windows xp was going to be "uncrackable" yet it was cracked two weeks before it came out so I'm sure people will find a way around these "checks" plus i hardly ever update anyway...especially service pack2..i never touched it after all the reports...though i am running a cracked copy of windows because this is my first machine and i had a friends help and he showed me how to build and install most things and basically cut corners by giving me some pirated software...i will purchase the actual os for my next system

Yea, this will be good and bad. Good in the sense that they want to keep piracy down, we'll need to see what happens with security...

it's nice to see that Mr. Gates is pushing people more quickly to a FREE Linux OS that doesn't need security updates often. that's where i'll end up eventually, or possibly on a Mac.

the reason windows is attacked more then every other os is that it has the highest market share, now if unix based os's (mac osx, linux, freebsd) had the largest share the people that write viruses/worms/trojans would focus on them instead of win32(and soon to be 64) becuase unix would have the largest market share.

that statemnt is strictly conjecture from Windows fans. sure if *nix had more market share it would be atacked more, but would the attacks be successful? probably not nearly as much as they are with Windows. the great thing about open source code is that EVERYONE has the opportunity to review it, find it's weaknesses and fix it as needed. MS code is not subject to the same scrutiny. i won't go into the issue of MS's software stablility compared to *nix based counterparts.
bottom line is this: if Mr. Gates wants to open my computer to security attacks (which is vulnerable due to his poorly designed code), i'll leave MS and never look back. i wont buy anything MS: mice, keyboards software applications etc. this could actually be a good thing. it's gonna force me to learn a better designed, more stable OS.

I think this is long overdue. Granted I have a parated copy and I know some others here do as well. I have no issue admitting that. I also have no issue admitting that if it comes down to it i will buy a legit copy of MS OS.
I also agree with Bonez, Microsoft has the largest market share and they are more vulnerable to attacks than other systems because of that. I may not like it, but the cold hard fact is that Microsoft owns the market and make the other (end user) operating systems miniscule in comparrison. Its going to be this way until the next generation of computing happens. I would say MS will own the market for at least another decade before they get bumped off the throne.
We all may know a good bit about computers, but lets face it. the majority of people that use a computer these days are stupid. They could care less about linux, OSX, OS9, unix etc. they all want to click on the damn pop ups and see where they end up. In most cases they do not even care about data storage, they just do a system recovery or ffr the drive because they do not know any better.
Why should they not get paid? Afterall its stolen software, i stole it, i will admit it. I got a free os for years and have gotten mor than enough use from it and like it enough to where I will but it.
Not saying that its more secure than mac os's or linux, but its more compatible with other software that common end users play with and that is why I will more than likley buy the software when i can not get the updates.

I've never had any real problems with MS's OS systems. Most of my problems were caused by me trying something new. I've never had ME crash either. Nor has my brother's XP crashed. XP seems that it could get me out of some of the jams where, for whatever reason, something wouldn't stop or start. (the extra Ctrl+Alt+delt key)
I agree with Bonez and Toetag, if Linux was the predominate OS or OS X was, people would find a way. It is hackable, I'm sure. It may take more time to learn, but once they know, it would be a large problem. We wouldn't know what problems it will cause until it happens.
P.S. I do wish XP wouldn't come so "dumbed" down....
