Home Audio/Theater

Stryker and I have been going back in forth in PM's discussing various things about home theater. PM's are kind of a pain, and I thought some of you guys may want to jump in the conversation. If not, to hell with ya.

continued from our PM's...

2400 cubic feet total. there's a 10 foot opening into a small dining room that has to be included in the cubic footage estimates. my TV, main speakers and sub are near that area. i really wanted to get that SVS 12" ISD sub. i think it would have handled this room adequately. I didn't think(nor did the owner of SVS) that the 10" would be enough for where the sub has to go, but at $600 + $50 shipping, i couldn't sell the ISD to my fiance. frankly, i shouldnt be spending that kind of money on one component anyway. i have a tendency to over-buy for what i need.

i got the Earthquake sub today. i haven't had a chance to calaibrate. so far it's ok, not spectacular. i want it to vibrate my sack like yours does. hopefully it will once it's tweaked.

Make sure you get either Digital Video Essentials or Avia (home theater setup DVDs) and an SPL meter. It helped me calibrate my sub easily.

It surprises me that they said it wouldn't fill your room since my room is 15'x12' with the one side completely open. I talked with SVS and he said it'll work fine in my room. It may be that I was able to corner load my sub and therefore have more bounce than you will get.

A great test track for your sub is (believe it or not) is towards the end of Finding Nemo where Darla taps the fish tank. Everytime I show that scene to people it never fails to get a "holy shit" out of them.

i had to corner load this one. the first 2 places i put it, there was almost no response. i was pissed. i thought i just wasted $400 on some piece of shit MDF box. my Klipsch dual 8" computer sub was better at this point. so i got to thinking, since the Klipsch sub sounded good in that corner, i should try the Earthquake in it. bingo! it sounded and felt much better when i put it there. i really don't think the SVS PB10 would have worked next to the couch as suggested by SVS. i can walk around this room and hear places that are completely devoid of bass. it's pretty weird.

my job tommorrow is gonna be to change my living room around a little bit to accomodate my new sub. right now the sub is firing directly into the back of my computer desk. moving that desk out of the way ought to give me more room pressurization. heh, if someone told me 2 weeks ago i would be changing my living room around to get better sound out of a sub, i would have laughed at them. not any more.

i was gonna buy a dvd burner, but have changed my mind. "backing up" my dvd movies looks like it's a couple hours long process. right now i don't have the time nor the patience to do this for each movie. my fiance still wants me to do it, but she's not the one that has to sit at the computer for a couple of hours.

i may end up downloading the game, i dunno. i thought back to how many times i installed BF1942. i'd say it was less than 5 times, so 5 installs of SH3 would probably be enough.

I am quite happy with my home built sub when turned up, it goes right through you. I love bass, ask Drayu. Anyway, I used a JBL 10" from my car, using an Advent amp, it really rocks. My while though, is a pain in the ass, my Klipsch speakers are all boxed away they were too big for her liking, so now we have Infiniti's(BAH) and just last week my dad went out and bought the new Yamaha stereo receiver, as all the HD crap( I dont keep up on that) but I got his old Yamaha. was top of the line about 4 years ago, has all that kewl crap, on screen display etc. and is loud as hell. anyway UI thought I would through my 2 cents in. I am more in to car audio myself(my wife cant yell at me, only the Police :p )

I have a little Sentra SerSpecV right now contains 9 speakers(3 subs)

2 - 10" Polk Db's, 500 watt Fosgate amp it isnt done yet, basically I have to get rid of the car, we need a family car oh well threw in 3 more cents

and I never made it to the mall, I will have SH3 by the end iof this week, just got another Gift card

I'll have to look it up, I have had them for a few years. My father is adecent handy man when it comes to woodwork, in fact he built half his garage into a wood shop, and has gone on to build some really decent speakers.

see if he can figure out how to make sub boxes for cars, currently there is a huge market for that.

Already can, have built a couple of boxes... I just hate having to carpet it. My best build was 2 2 10" boxes with Polks in em, firing down in the Extra cab of my pickup, with Mirrors under em, and an amp rack between em, them. The truck had 12 speakers altogether I think.(bout 6 years ago) Oh yeah, it w as competition style, with a nice Pioneer deck, I have some picks I can scan and through up when I get to it. The sound was incredible, Fosgate Punch amps, Audiocontrol splitter, etc.
