Hahahaha wait a minute - You say on one hand, there's no way you're paying for it, then on the other declare the levels of service you expect when doing business? - Business involves money - You've gotta pay to play.
(By the way, there was 2 non-subscriber non-ctrl servers there as well)
But if you need anything mirrored - Let me know.

Um Packet.... You say Pay to play, what do you think they're getting everytime an ad pops up on the screen from Gamespy, IGN, fileplanet, or their other related sites? MONEY.... That is one of their two means of revenue generation. And trust me, I've seen some bank reports on other companies that generate revenue by that means and they aren't losing money on non-subscribers by any means.
And the major complaint is simply "common sense". Those non-DL CTL servers didn't pop-up till 24 hours after the update was released, on either the subscriber or non-subscriber side. Yeah that's intelligent, "These guys made this mod which we are offering to host, however those running LInux servers are SOL as they can't use our DLCTL servers from their Linux box.... Again do you not see the utter lack of common sense and logic behind that move? It's like buying a Mac because of its "stability", but getting it solely for a gaming machine..... Like I said I'm not bashing anything, except the general lack of intelligence behind their decisions. And I've had the server updated since day 1, just not via fileplanet. I was just voicing my problems with having to go and search the net for it rather than get it from FP due to their current handling of distribution. FP supplies a convenient means with which to get files, at the price we pay either via viewing the ads, or paying the subscription fee, that's my only point.

You know as well as I, the cpm/cpc market is pretty much dead. When was the last time you clicked a banner and bought something
On that same note, my FP account lets me disable ads accross gamespy and ign - Nice sub-feature, dont you wish you cable company did that?

Admittedly, as a paying subscriber, i've never noticed the lack of dl ctrl servers for 'free users'. - I suppose that sort of sucks - when i looked yesterday they were there. Dunno about release time.

No, i see the logic. Its called PROFIT
As a banker in a capatilist society, i'm sure you at least partially understand the sentiment! ("as a non payer, i see better servers with more features, maybe i should subscribe, and give this company my money by paying for something that should be free!")

So in the end, do you agree that maybe GC's release practices (and other developers as well) and their lack of pre-arranged mirrors, or a timed distribution system are maybe more at fault than say, fileplanet for just being there to offer a service (that you may or may not like) ?

Actually this is the only point I can fault you on. Being in the banking industry I can say the way it works is "How many services can I give the customer for free to keep them as customers, or steal them from other banks so that in the future we can get them to buy further services from us such as IRA's, CD's and the like".
Thus we have free checking and savings, with free online bill pay, free $900 overdraft protection at the start, free checks every so many months, free online banking, etc. etc. etc.... The intent being to get them hooked, get in there with all this free stuff and wonderfull service, and then get them to buy services they may or may not want or need which are more profitable to us (i.e. CD's, IRA's, business checking, higher return interest rates, mortgages, loans, re-fi's, etc.). Now admittedly Gamespy/FP/IGN has no real competition and should someone move in I could see they could really make a killing by providing far more services at a lower cost to the public and pull many of the subscribers from them, especially if they offered reserved spots on company ran, well admined gameservers to subscribers. But again not likely to happen as not many are that enthused anymore with the .bomb revolution.
And I'm actually enjoying this conversation Packet.... always loved talking business .
Edit: And I'm willing to bet Packet that within a year you could turn NS into a "for profit" business without having to deal with renting servers, or setting them up. Actually just offering the services NS currently offers with some minor custom portal software I'm willing to bet you could make a decent profit, AND get involved with the game manufacturers.
