Smoking.
Okay so me and my friend had this discussion the other day about the future of smoking and cigarettes.
He was claiming that within 50 years smoking will be banned in the western world. We are allready today seeing how western goverments are placing bill after bill that they want to forbidd smoking in all kinds of places, such as restaurants, bars, schools, hospitals, public places etc etc. What will be the next???
I can just take a look at my own country. 10 years ago you could smoke EVERYWHERE - hospitals, trains, banks, cinemas, schools (special rooms inside the school). Nowdays they even forbidd it in bars and restaurants (i know, it suck BALLS!!!). A lot of people were smoking 10 years ago. There are still a lot of smokers, but I'm quite sure it has gone down a bit during these last 10 years. But all these forbidds, along with higher prices makes people smoke less, there is no talk about it.
I'm intrested in your opinion about this. Will cigarettes be banned in 50 years? I mean - again - the goverments don't do much for us smokers to feel comfortable about our choise. Should we be revoked that freedom?
If you ask me, to be honest, there is a big possibility that this will happen. Since I'm a smoker; I would probably have to move from country to country
And please when you answer, don't look at it from your own egoistic perspective, but as a whole. Is there a future for cigarettes in the western world? Why? Why not?
And please don't spam the **** out of this thread, serious answer only please.

I don't think smoking will go away anytime soon.
You correctly state "western" countries. While the health benefits of not smoking and not being exposed to second-hand smoke are gaining legislative momentum in western countries, cigarette are still king elsewhere. Just take a look at the prevalence of smoking in Asia.
Then there is the issue of cigars. Just as lethal as cigarettes yet seen as a more respectable vice. Go figure.
Curtailed, yes. Over-taxed, yes. Zealously legislated, yes. Become extinct, never. Some genies can never be put back into the bottle.

cigarettes will never be banned as it is a HUGE money maker for both government and state.
I am a smoker. (wanting to quit)as for banning smoking in bars, restaurants and coffe houses, I see it as a good thing. A non-smokers chance of getting cancer was 40% higher if they worked in an establishment who permitted smoking.
As a musician who frequently works in bars and restaurants I like not being "smoked out". and my previously pregnant wife could come watch me perform.

i smoke but don't care that they are banned in public establishments. i don't smoke in my house and don't want to smell smoke when i'm eating. as for the bars, well i stopped going to them a long time ago. but i think there should be one room where all the smokers can go to inhale a lung dart.

I have no sympathy for smokers that are upset with the new regulations. I dont care if any one smokes. However as long i dont have to deal with the second hand aspect of it what do i care. Cigarettes may be regulated like crazy but will never go away. You should see all the chain smokers i run across in daily life.

I am sitting here with a Nicoderm patch on my arm. I am quitting smoking. I have smoked on and off for 31 years of my life. I am 47 years old. I have quit many times before, it's easy. Right. I like to smoke. I find some sort of relaxing effect, some sort of stress and anxiety eliminator. I agree with your friend, smoking will be banned within the next 50 years in the Western world. The fact of the matter is, smoking cigarettes is unhealthy. Smoking cigarettes kills. It is costing our health systems billions. When I was younger I could smoke and then ride my bike or go running around and feel no ill effects. I was indestructable. Now if I smoke and walk up a few flights of steps, I feel slightly winded. Hmmm. Not so indestructable anymore. Gee I guess they are no good for me. I am not dying or anything, my doctor didn't say to me if I don't quit I will die. My wife hates me smoking, I never smoke in my house. I have 3 children ranging in ages from 8 to 13. They have never seen me smoke. I go hide outside and do it behind their backs. This is getting more difficult now. I do not want any of them to start smoking. I hate the smell of smoke when I eat. My eyes used to burn out of my head when I went to bars, and I smoked too. People have the right to make choices in life and that is what the Governments in the world should not take away from anyone. If there is a complete ban or even making smoking illegal, people will still smoke if they wish. There will be a Black Market trade in cigarettes. There is now. People may grow their own tobacco. Prohibition of alcohol in the 30's in the United States worked. Cocaine, Heroin, Hashish and Marijuana are not only banned but illegal but they are readily available to anyone who seeks them out. Freedom is what you make of it. Not what the Government tells you what it is. Use discretion and moderation in life and you can do whatever you want anyways.
