within a week i had risen to #16 and within 3 weeks i was number 8 for voip
now yes, within those 3 weeks some sites started linking to it, but i kept #8 position until i had to take it down.
ill call that a testimonial

I would not call that a testimonial, I would call it having a frined that had the ability to link you to a domain that is an authority for network technology, and has a well known and established website with a very high pr.
That is why you go that, had it not been an athority site, and a little lower in PR (all depending on where he linked you) you would not have seen that.
People will pay big money for high pr linked sites, anything that is a pr 5 or better and you link to it, well that is a big deal to a lot of people. Not for me, i have access and work on several hundred pr5,6 and 7 sites that are rather old.
The fact is, linking used to be the way to get up on google, but those days are almost gone, google is devaluing links that are not relevant to your own site. Sorry, though i beleive that in your situation, you are kind of right about the link driving the results, but not many people can say they were linked on a cisco owned domains.
Its funny you say VOIP though, yesterday i was going through some new link submissions to a few site i maintain and it was splattered with submissions from someone wanting me to link to his voip website about 20 times. The funny thing about it is that I know who submitted them and it was the SEO that I replaced, (He left January 1). He left at the beginning of the month and i had no idea, he could have added his sites to those directories because i never changed the login info, but i did now.
I am pretty sure that he was going to beef his VOIP sites by linking about 100 or so anchor text links on these domains to drive his new sites to the top. Needless to say they were all deleted. had he let me know that he wanted to have some links there, i would have been more than willing, i thought he was a nice guy, but he did not and tried to get slick. Now i have to go through the better part of 5000 links to see if he has been doing this all along.
