Does anyone browse the web on their cell phone?
I'm holding in my hand an incredible deal from Sprint. For $30/mo you get not only 500 anytime minutes and a bunch of other things, you also get unlimited Vision or Power Vision(like broadband speeds with the proper phone) data access. This includes unlimted web, email etc.
So my question is, have you used the web features on your phone? Can you go to any website you want, or is it just a preset list of sites. Has anyone used the Java instant messengers?

I tried surfing to a few various sites a while back, if I remember correctly most sites do come up, but I wasn't able to access these forums.

mostly i use a mix of sprint and verizon evdo for my pc internet access on the go (whatever's in range...i much prefer sprint though)
to answer your question about browsing on your phone -
1st, you can access any site you want...you can do most things you can with a stripped down browser on your pc..now remember, its still on a 2.5in screen.
2nd, the messengers are all up to the phone. ive tested both the treo and blackberry both have a keyboard that is great for emailing and instant messaging. if you are going to get a phone, go online and look at ratings - after you get the ratings..ask me.
there are tons of phones for nearly the exact same price range and if you get the wrong one, you get RITA for the next 2 years.

i looked at the blackberrys on nextel's site. i dont see any that work on EVDO, but they do work on the regular Vision PCS network. here's the phone i'm looking at. it's only one of 3 or 4 that support Sprint's EVDO.

give me a day or 2 to decide if i'm gonna do this. i don't want to post it right now and have everyone hammer Sprint for this deal and cause me to miss out.

I haven't really searched the web much, but using AOL IM is very easy. The only thing you have to do is set up a buddy list on the computer and it loads on your phone. The hardest part is the 60 words per hour typing.

Ya, I agree with Mitch on this one. I have AOL, MSN and a couple of others on mine. They are handy for dropping a message or two to a friend, but not for back and forth conversation. Although, with a blackberry or a sidekick I can see how it would be much better with the full QWERTY pad.

^^ yeah, agreed. i just came back from the Sprint store after playing with a few web connected phones there. i browsed this forum on the Samsung phone i am interested in. sorry to say i'm not impressed. it's not the phone, it's just that this technology has a lot further to go before it would be enough to satisfy me. even on the Power Vision connection a web cached video preview was quite choppy. i would imagine that streaming video would be worse. Power Vision was definately faster at web browsing than the regular Vision connection though. instant messaging looks like it would be a pain in the ass.
i can't see myself using the web features on a cell phone. i wish the Blackberry had been charged. i would have liked to see it in action on the web. i don't think i'll get that MP3 Samsung phone either. it doesn't have an equalizer for the player , only comes with a 32mb miniSD card and you MUST have an SD card reader to get music onto the card. even though the phone has a USB port, you can't sync it with your computer for MP3 transfers. very dumb. $150(phone) + $50(1gig miniSD card with SD adapter) + $20(SD card reader) = $220. not worth it imo.
what they're offering in the plan is excellent though. nobody can touch this price for 500 minutes. i just have to decide on a cheaper phone.
