Built mine, got most parts from newegg.com and a few at local best buy and frys. I thought it would be very hard to do and I was going to get a dell, but now i'm glad i didn't. It was actually easy to build and you can get exactly what you want, without paying for stuff your never going to use.

I built mine with whatever I found lying around on the street :p, actually I shopped around for a while and looked at what I wanted and then tried to argue the price down (only a few times it worked). If you build a computer read the damn manuals, I remember when I built my current machine I couldn't figure out why the stupid thing wouldn't boot. Turns out these new P4 HT mobos need 2 freakin power plugs in em.

i'm a cheap ****er. i buy parts from whoever has the cheapest price( i say this as i'm filling out the rebate form from Buy.com for my new soundcard). usually i purchase from Newegg, but for example i saved $75 buy purchasing my 21" monitor from another vendor that had decent reviews on Reseller Ratings.

there ain't no feeling like the one you get when your monitor's box barely fits through the front door.

I've built 5 computers over the last 24 months or so. I have not had a store bought machine in years. Most of mine have been AMD CPU'd.. 2 of them have been Pentium 4 machines. One for each brother.

This machine I am using now is an AMD 64Bit platform. Rather happy with its performance. It benchmarks well for the $$ I have in it and plays everything smoothly. I plan to upgrade video cards from my FX5900 to something more modern in a few months. Just waiting for the prices to drop.

I think building your own is the way to go. You get EXACTLY what you want. You can shop around and find the best buys on hardware. I have used NewEgg mostly. However, I have also used some other vendors, as well as, Best Buy and Circuit City.

My current computer (P4 2.4 / GF4 4400 TI) is the first one I've build. My previous computer, an Apple G4 (300) didn't come in parts .
I have just removed all those irrating fans and installed a watercooling system from Zalman with the GPU block. (http://www.zalman.co.kr/eng/product/...dx=63&code=021)
Now I can fully enjoy the beautifull sound of my machine-gun.
