Ok, issues:
1.Your power supply has to have a certain amp rating for your new GPU to work properly. I recommend atleast a 500watt, just in case for 8800GTS..unless you run alot of shit like fans (i have 6) more than 2 hard drives and more than 2 optical drives.
2. Your power supply HAS TO HAVE a 6 pin PCIe connector...which old psu's dont have.
Other Info:
If you have the money, would recommend you get a psu that is 80+% effeciency certified...it make sure you dont rank up a high electric bill if you happen to be like me and leave your computer on for days. If you dont do this then isnt worth the extra money; global warming is a myth, so could careless rather spill more co2 into the atmosphere cause since it only makes up .001% of the gases in the atmosphere anyways. So do it for the extra money in your pocket.

Make sure you dont go cheap on your psu, its really important to get a good one. Dont get an off brand. You will be hurting if it dies early or doesnt give a constant voltage because cheaply made and get BSODs or like mine...my computer will sometimes freeze when i set my wireless headphones on the charger...the change in voltage makes it to freeze. Im shooting myself in the foot for getting a cheaper, but cooler looking psu. NEVER go for looks when it comes to something so vital.
Other thoughts:
I have an 8800 GTS 640MB...running with a 620watt psu..including 6 fans, 2 op drives and 2 sata drives...everything works fine (other than issue above). I have 1 PCIe 16x slot aswell and 1 PCIe 1x slot..not a big deal...and unless you are a rich bastard and are for sure going sli..you only need 1. I would upgrade your computer to a dual core before you buy such a high end gpu. Most of the power will not be unlocked until you go dual core so ive heard...just a heads up...I learned that AFTER i spend 400 bucks on the card...so mine could be running alot faster. Its actually a huge gain..30-40%...so ya.
BTW, would go xfx, they have a double lifetime warrenty....so the default.. if your card breaks they will replace it...but if you happen to sell your card, the new owner will also be covered...so high resell value.

(it doesnt cover overclocking dmg btw so dont be an idiot)
My next PSU is going to be this:
