Solid state drives, flash drives

Hi!

Anyone considering ssd drives, like the Samsung 32GB or Transcend 8GB flash drives in a game pc? As the data transfer speeds are higher than spinning drives for home use and there is no seek time at all, powering up the pc and loading games would probably be a 'flash' !

They still cost a lot, but you could manage with a smaller version for one or two games. And have a traditional hard drive for most of your big files.

Punkbuster verification for example in BF2 seeks a lot on disk, that time probably would drop significantly.

The Gigabyte i-ram is another option. I would just like it to accept ddr2, which is cheaper than ddr now, and more than 4x1GB modules. And SATA2 would be nice.

the only real savings for them is less power and less moving parts.

but they have a limited lifespan.

That's a bit of a myth nowadays in my opinion. The lifespan is not an issue with current flash technology and proper wear leveling. Spinning drive will fail decades before flash runs out of erase cycles.

My understanding is the Military is using the crap out of SSD's now. They are nearly completely shock proof.

I just saw somewhere that one of the Laptop Companies has an all SSD laptop out.

I think the SSD thing is a great idea. It is the next step for computer tech. It seems they have finally hit the barrier on Processors so they are just adding more on the same chip. Once we get past the mechanical restrictions for computer tech and lose all the wires we will really be getting into the next generation for computers.

Imagine a computer that has no wires and everything fits in something the size of a PDA. Add wireless video glasses and you have a PC that is always with you and infinitely more powerful than the stuff that is around now.

SSD is Solid State Drive.

Basically it is a flash- Hard Drive. No moving parts it is just memory like a memory stick. Way faster and more rugged. Plus there is no mechanical lag because it works just like your system memory.

Gigabyte i-Ram / cg-ramdisk

Call me stupid, but I ordered a couple of these from ewiz.com and they arrived today. They take 4x1GB ddr ram each, so if I raid-0 them, it will be an 8 GB disk. I only bought 4GB of ram for now, to test it first if it is at all fun or works. That may be enough for one or two game installations, or windows xp and a game. It is just a fun experiment, nothing serious, but if you have suggestions what to test it with or if you want to know how it works or something.. let me know!
