New Hard Drive
Today my wife's PC was making some wicked clicking noises, and it was definitely her hard drive. So I thought I'd take this opportunity to give her my 120GB 8MB cache IDE drive.
So the question is, what should I go to? I do have serial ATA on board. I can't afford the 10k RPM drive, and 74GB is too low for me. I'd like to get another 120GB or around that much. Any recommendations?

hmm..im always hunting deals on hd's..i have seagate 160's in my rig (sata) the only thing with seagate's are they get hotter than other drives out there. but other than that they have a great 5 year warranty and great support!
just so you know, i also have an 80gb maxtor, a 250 maxtor, a 300 gb seagate, and a 36 wd raptor (i dont discriminate)
but i do know deals.

I dunno there Stryker, but you made me want to find out. I have the 10k 74 Gig Raptor, and I say that thing is sweet. Certainly faster than 7200, and I really don't want to go back.
Alright Styker, SATA 3.0GBs is SATA II. SATA can move 1.5 GBs (One source said 150 megabytes, so I'm not sure, but 1.5 Gbs makes more sense) per second and SATA II is 3.0 GBs. SATA II has Native Command Queuing which helps preformance, but I'd say having a drive spin at 10k over 7200 will be a bigger boost to preformance.

it's theoretically double the throughput. SATA 150= 1.5 Gb/s.
how much you want to spend? you could get the 74gb Raptor and then when u have the extra money, get another one and use them both in RAID 0 for for about 140gb. i'm sure u know how fast that would be performance wise.

Western Digital has a drive that is 120gb, SATA 3bg/s 7,200 RPM and 16mb cache. it's about $110 directlly from WD.

HP, you seem to know what you are talking about, if I have four SATA connectors on my mobo, will those work for SATA 150 and SATA II?

well they all will support SATA150. that's the first generation SATA. i don't know if they'll support SATA2. i'm kinda wondering myself if my board will support it.

I'm nbot sure if I want to spend almost $200 for only a 74GB HD even if it is super fast. I have a P4P800 Deluxe motherboard, I'll have to see if it can support the new SATA.
Edit: Horse you sure it's 1.5Gb? On Asus's website it says:
"The latest ICH5R chipset now delivers 150MB/s fast data transfer (SATA) and striping performance to enhance computing efficiency."

there's different ways they rate these things. how they get the ratings is beyond me. these are all theoretical speeds anyway. don't expect to ever see these numbers.
from what i understand:
SATA1 = SATA150 = 1.5gb/s = 150mb/s.
SATA2 = SATA300 = 3.0gb/s = 300mb/s
