Improper cpu speed

I recently upgraded my CPU from a 2.8 to a 3.0E
at the same time, I upgraded my sound card from a
SB Live card to a SB Audigy 2

when i started my comp, it loaded windows to my desktop then rebooted itself.
It did this 3 times before I shut the power down. I figured It was the sound card so I took it out.

when I rebooted, It went straight to my bios and in red on the right it said something like:

Due to an Improper CPU speed your system something or other blah blah blah. I checked the speed. it looked right, andthen I rebooted.

then I went into my selective start-up in msconfig,
and uncheck all that had to do with the sound card, shut her down, poped the card back in and whammo,

problem fixed... I think

now every once in a while my shit will just reboot.

like last night i was playin CS:S and my wife asked me to grab one of her recipes off of foodnetwork.com so I alt-tabbed out and got the recipe turned my printer on and...

Whammo. It rebooted.

then later on playin CS:S my system locked up.

So any suggestions???

I'm stumped

Oh yea I mad kick ass waffles today

make sure your bios settings are correct, save all your info, and then reinstall windows.

just my OPINION though.

Sounds big enough to me but the experts here might know more.

you went from a 2.8e to a 3.0e?

does your bios support that speed processor? updated it lately?

random reboots are often temperature related. get that processor heated up by using Prime95. if there's a problem with the cpu or your cooling, that program should find it. remember, ANY errors indicate something is wrong. since it's an intel processor, run 2 instances of the program. set one instance affinity to cpu 1 and the other to the virtual processor(hyper thread), cpu 2.

it's gonna get hot but if you're hardware is ok there shouldn't be a problem. on the other hand, if your cooling is not suitable, there is a very small chance you could burn up the cpu if the cooling problem is your HSF. watch your temps for the first 15 minutes or so, until they stablilize. then let Prime95 loop overnight.

Drivers! Sound Card Drivers could be the problem as well...

Also.... make sure your new sound card is not sharing an irq with another device.. ie. your video card.

Just some things that I had once upon a time that caused me some issues.

1st, yea, grab ALL latest drivers/bios - also what kind of ram do you have?

like Horsepower said..
its gotta be heat issues..thermal throttling, rebooting etc...did you smudge the thermal paste before putting it on? (heh, gotta ask - did you remember to take the plastic sheet away from the thermal paste?)

most likely other thing? power supply...get a good 24 pin power supply. 500w minimum is what I would reccomend.

500Watt? Should be ok with what he has. Aside from checking the bios, is it a Intel 5xx series Prescott? (please say it has a J at the end) If it is, ick. Got to be the hotest CPUs ever made and stock cooling does diddly squat. So check Temps. Use Prime95, but you can also try Everest and Sisoftsandra.
