I highly doubt that formatting it will help though, it sounds more like a windows driver issue to me. I strongly recommend just going to their website and fishing around for the windows drivers. Windows would probably still detect it even if it was a hardware issue.

if it is a windows driver issue bolth of his drives would be wonky(since the IDE driver is motherboard dependant not drive dependant) my old 30gb would regester in the BIOS, but would not load in windows because it would not spin up.
probally just the motor dying depending on how old it is(and it's a maxtor who are known for drives with bad motors)
