Mucho Video Lag
Ok, I'm just gonna ask this here because everybody just laughed while I was in game...
These are my system specs:
Intel P4 2.8GHz CPU
2Gb DDR 400
6800GT APG 8x
Everything else is just there as far as Counter Strike is concerned.
My question...
Why am I getting so much damn video lag? It never happened before the server upgrade, and was pretty uncommon when I first switched (and I had half the RAM then), but now a days I get video lag every time I try to move or shoot something.
I realize this is due partly from the 100 tick, but I've had too many people tell me they aren't lagging at all to believe that the server is at fault. So... any ideas what is causing it or things I can do to fix it? I've already been trying the whole "fps_max" trick. I've been putting in numbers all the way up to 7800. Nothing ever happens.
Any suggestions or ideas would be great! TY.

Yea, I run source maxed usually(16xAF 6xaa or w/e is max) everything high 1280x1024, and usually get 70-90 fps. In WC3 I get <30 with the graphics even turned down a little bit. I turned AA off, some other stuff down and Textures on medium and I can get around 60 on some maps, but intense gun fights is still pretty rough.

Well, I've got it on lowest settings now. It runs decent enough, but I'll probably have to upgrade CPUs. So sad...
Oh, my ping is never more than 50 and is usually in the teens to low 30s. As for FPS rate... I have no idea how to check it. But, lowering the settings worked well enough. Thanks for the help guys/gals/mixed genders/whatevers.

I'm running a terrible set up, and my lag doesnt seem that bad. I'm talking 512 ram, 2 gig cpu, 40$ vid card terrible set up. You have the latest drivers, and sure it's configured correctly? Just doesnt sound to me like the hardware itself is at fault.

Well, if you're used to a bad set up, it's harder to notice the lag cause you've adapted to it. I used to game with an x300 se, getting <30fps and I was able to do a decent job. I got my new card and got used to getting >60 fps, and now whenever I dip under 50 I can feel the lag and don't like it. [In COD2 the only reason I run Directx7 is cause I get around 60fps with dx9 on, I can feel the difference between 60(dx9) and 180(dx7)]

This is actually better then what it was when I first got source.
There is lag, but with his set up there really shouldnt be as much as he seem to be getting.

Cause of the problem = I guess there was a power surge in my house that I didn't know about. (I just assumed my girlfriend turned the computer off) My surge protector didn't do it's job. Apparently, before the power supply shut off, electricity managed to screw around with my hardware. Funny thing is is that I went to the store and bought a RAM upgrade (the 2 gigs I have mentioned) and plugged it in before noticing.
How I figured this out. Making sure it wasn't bad RAM, I went to plug in my old RAM. I looked at it a bit and noticed there was just a tad bit of discoloration on the edges (figured, eh... it's old). I plugged them in, and my computer didn't want to boot up. It did... it just took... well... quite some time. So, bad original RAM... slow processing speed... computer turned off after a rain storm... *CUSSING RAMPANTLY!!* The monitor still had power running to it, and I never had to reset the surge protector (why would I? My girlfriend turned the computer off...). Hopefully I'll be getting re-embursed for all the fried parts. I even went out and upgraded power supplies thinking the new RAM might just need more power.
Be weary of anything labeled MonsterCable or MonsterPower....

That sucks, about a year ago I just had a normal surge protector, nothing special, and my house got struck by lightning. It fried the monitor, and messed up the insides (didn't bother seeing what, it was a PIII). When this computer was purchased I went with a Belkin that protected the phone line too (I read somewhere that many people overlook the internet line, and that's what kills computers more than going through the psu.) Hopefully if I get struck again it keeps this baby safe.
Point is, don't go cheap on your surge protector.
