I love overclocking. I've been doing it for years (since my AMD XP 2400+ Tbred).

I am running my Core2Quad Q6600 @ 3.4Ghz (stock is 2.4) with air cooling. I could go higher with water cooling, much higher, but that's not really worth it for me. What was worth it was my huge heatsink . I recommend getting a non-stock heatsink, as most are pretty lame. You can probably get that up to 2.8Ghz without much problem, and even 3GHz if you try really hard.

Anyways, if you want to know the gritty details, I can help. Just not now. Look around on The Google for a bit. Most overclocking is done in Bios. Increasing the Core Voltage, the Bus Speed and the Multiplier. There is a lot more to it, obviously, and there is a ton of stuff on the web about it. Hell, someone probably has your exact computer and has overclocked.

Downsides: 1) Overclocking shortens the lifespan of your cpu.
2) Runs the risk of frying your cpu!
3) Uses more electricity (for those of us who pay that stuff)

Upsides: 1) 1337
2) More performance per dollar!
3) Gives you the extra juice you need, if you need it (and you do)
4) is fun as hell.

Main thing is you need patience. It took me forever to get to where I am. I went about 5MHz at a time (which is a little over-careful, but hey, I just got this cpu!).

Research research research. You can never do enough research. And by that I mean look at what other people have done right and what they have done wrong.

be back later!

The biggest failure people have doing overclocking is cooling. You need to set some benchmarks before hand monitoring temps, fan speeds etc because if your pc already runs hot overclocking will just fry it. The actual overclocking process is fairly easy, i also used the guide on toms hardware on my old pc. just make sure you have plenty of cooling!

As it runs right now, the inside of my case is at 78°F. I bought a heat sink when I built my computer. It wasn't the one the came standard. I don't think I would over clock it to an extreme. Maybe just some performance boost. Maybe 2.13GHz (what my computer props say) up to about 2.6GHz range.

assuming the multiplier is locked on your CPU, increase the FSB in BIOS. a good MB will allow you to change all these settings (i like ASUS personally, ABITs and GigaBytes are usually really good too ) as you increase your bus speed you increase the speed of all the components (bad). so you may have to lower the speed setting of your RAM if you dont have high performance RAM. that's the short version.

Gone are the good ol' days of unlocked multipliers on regular CPUs. that allowed you to OC the CPU without the other components. performance boosts nowadays are not as high as they used to be (just the way the technology is).

i had a PII 350 running 396 and AMD 2000 ran at 2400.

Go to TomsHardware.com to learn to OC.

Yeah, goto tomshardware.com and search your cpu. Would also suggest you get speedfan to monitor your temps really easily. Its free and works great. You probably could go up to 2.8 for sure...but you better have a good heatsink and fan and not the stock fan like what was suggested. Also, get IE 7. Its tabbed so less resources used. Firefox is also useful if you want to change to a whole new browser.

As sad as it may be, I base most of my web design on IE... not cross platform. I'm not a pro designer or developer. Just a little freelancer.

I already said I have a custom heat sink/fan. The case has 3 fans as well. My case also has guages for temp and fan speed so I can monitor them right from the front of the case.
