More information about the problem = quicker solution.

Can you reproduce the problem? Does it only happen when playing games? If so, every game, or just certain ones?

How long into the game-playing does it occur? If you can monitor your temps, are they all behaving normally? What are the temps when the problem starts?

There are a few basic things that would cause this problem:

1. Your monitor is FUBAR.
2. Your wiring or adapters are FUBAR.
3. Your video card is on the brink of committing suicide.
4. Your drivers are corrupt.
5. Your PCI connection is having problems. (If you say "PCI? I'm running AGP!" I'll have to shoot you)

Keep in mind, it could also be insufficient power. But since you've probably been running the system a while without problems, your PS is probably OK. If the screen won't clear after restart, try flashing your bios.

Since you say it freezes, you can eliminate options 1 & 2. So, you're probably looking at a FUBARed video card, FUBARed drivers, or dust. In that order.

Take out the card and clean it as well as the PCI slot. Then reinstall drivers (if you just updated drivers, do a rollback to older ones). If you can, remove your card and implant it into another system to see if the problem is replicated on that system. Finally, good luck!

PS ... Are you by any chance running a 7900 GT?

WARNING: Troubleshooting system problems using my advice in no way transfers responsibility to my person. Attempt at your own risk!

I'm not sure how you can consider my eloquent explanation of problems and techniques for possible solutions a repost of that garbled illegible mess you posted.

It probably rendered Gemini completely brain-dead. I know I sure lost brain cells reading it.

Anyways, I'll take it as a compliment to my rhetoric and be on my way . ^^

k yall... well it is unreproduceable on command. there is nothing i can do to make it happen... it only happends during counter strike and it is random. probably once a month can be expected (if at all. its only the third time this has happened and the other two were a month apart. not sure bout this one tho.)

agp sux

its a 7600 gs

has no problems with more stressful games.

i think it may actually have something to do with norton somehow because each time i reboot it seems like it tried to do a scan during gameplay? not sure tho.

the screen isnt messed up after the restart.

dont know how to take the gpu off.

edit: it technically doesnt freeze but it gets broken record on certain clips of sound for like 1-2 minutes before it gets broken record on another sound that is supposed to be immediately after for another 1-2 mins. (after 15 mins of hoping it will get better i restart)
i figure the main problem is the drivers.

Turn off? Good god, try /uninstall.

Trying to do anything remotely stressful on a computer while Norton is scanning is like trying to fit an elephant through a car window. It's just not good science.

If you're the type that absolutely must have virus/spam/spyware/blahblahblah protection, try downloading AVG for free. You could also try out the VIPRE beta. Anything's better than that resource-eating, over-bloated program once known as Norton.

Personally, good judgement > virus protection any day of the week. I haven't used active or passive protection in years, short of the occassional Spyware S&D scan, and still running virus-free.

WARNING: PC protection is serious business. Take my advice with a grain of salt. Or pepper. Whatever.
