did it ever work correctly? does it happen with other games also? any hardware changes lately?

check his temperatures, video card and cpu. both the mobo and videocard probably came with utilities to do this.

His computer just crashes to desktop.. It doesn't reboot or do anything else funky? I wonder if it could be a heat problem with his video card.. Can he play any other type of graphic intensive games without crashing?

A crash to desktop can sometimes be linked to the video card or it's drivers or another Hardware device like a sound card and its drivers.

Also, he needs to check in his device manager to make sure that his video card and sound card (if external like a Sound Blaster) are not sharing an IRQ with another device. This is a big no-no. You always want your video card on its own IRQ. Same with an add in Sound Card for best performance. In the same token. You also do not want your inbound internet connection to be sharing an IRQ with another device either. Have him check to see if he is sharing any IRQ addresses with any of those devices. If he is.. he has Data Colliding with Data. Keep in mind that the computer will take what it thinks is MOST important first on the IRQ priority. This could cause a crash too.

To do this go into your Device Manager - If using Windows XP..

Goto: My Computer/View System Information/Hardware/Device Manager

Then once in the Device Manager, click on "View" in the toolbar. Then click on "Resouces by connection". Then click on the "+" next to "interrupt request"

The path would be like this: View/Resources by Connection/interrupt request

You will then see a bunch of numbers next to the devices installed on your computer.. Usually 0 - 20 something. Pay close attention to things installed in a "PCI" slot. Example: You should see your Video card with a number to the left of it. Like my Nvidia FX5900 is on IRQ 16.

If he has things sharing the same IRQ.. There are some things that can be done to try and get stuff on its own IRQ. Let me know what you find out.

Also could be sound drivers. I had that problem where my PC would reboot because of driver crashes. I have almost the same exact system as him. The ASUS board came with a program called Asus Probe that will monitor heat. Tell him to install it and see what the CPU temp is.

move the nic to another slot. the agp and closest pci slot share the same IRQ.

That was what I was gonna tell him to do.. If your nic card was in slot one, move it to another one.. If you have 5 PCI slots.. always, keep 1 & 5 free. If you have 4 slots, 1 & 4 should stay free and unused.

The first slot and last slot always share an IRQ with another device. The first slot as horse mentioned.. the AGP slot. The last one will sometimes share with your IDE controller or built in LAN device (nic card) or USB controller.
