Lightbulb Punkbuster is a ball buster

After the release of PB client version 1.084 I have not been able to play BF on my "work" laptop on punkbuster servers. It works fine on non PB servers. I did buy 2 BF1942 game disks and switch between my son's "slow" computer and the laptop. Everything works on the "slow" computer. On the laptop I get a message similar to "inadequate O/S priveleges" and sometimes I get booted right away or I can play for about 10 minutes before I get booted.

I assume that using the laptop, I am not considered the administrator since I cannot manage the security log (this is the only item on the FAQ for BF1942 on the evenbalance website that I could not change). Does anyone know any way around this? This would save me some $$ from upgrading a second PC to play BF when I have the use of a decent laptop.

Have you tried manually updating pb? There is a file you can download and put in your pb folder that allows you to update it, and this might help you.

http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=updatepb.php

Get the pbweb file and run it.

Yes, I previously manually updated but still with the same results. I'll have to do more research.

Do you have a firewall turned on or a port not open in a router?? How about the built in Firewall of XP? Is it on or off?? Maybe there is a port or something for PB that needs to be open and its not??

Give your user Administrative rights. Done/Done.

I'll have to double check the exact settings, but I know that I have admin. priveleges for everything except the security log. I run this at home off the router that I use as "Crippler" and checked that the firewall is off. I was sucessful at running on the "old" PC that is on the same router (but it is horribly slow). I think that the problem is the security log (not being able to make changes).

I'm not sure if this is related but I cannot run windows updates in the traditional manner (I guess that at work, the MIS group has activated settings to prevent this). In order to get a windows update to work, I have to save the hotfix, then physically disconnect from the network, reboot and then run the hotfix. This is the same case if I try to execute a hotfix when I have the laptop at home. Even though I am considered an administrator, the "security log" is greyed out and I assume that the MIS network admin. has it set so that they are the only ones that can access that particular feature on XP.

Hopefully this will give the techies out there food for thought!

Thanks for the suggestions and I will keep trying them out!

It sounds to me like they have crippled your account (no pun intended). If you got this michine from work it's possible they have restricted you from doing things by changing settings in your regsistry. You need to have FULL administrative rights. You need to log into your machine as "Administrator" to have full rights. Keep in mind they could have changed the name of the Administrator account. But what ever it's called on your machine you need full admin rights.
