only 3 gigs

I just installed 4 gigs of ram and BIOs shows 4 but in windows I'm only showing 3 what do I have to do to get all 4 to be usable in windows XP pro

never mind i got it

Well...i understand you got it..but you arent running 64bit so you couldnt use all the ram anyways because 32bit only supports a max of 4 gigs...but the system sees it as less because of it being 32bit. You should upgrade to 64bit

STOPP!!! wait one sec. So given my next statement let me know idon't let me know something.

OK I have a dell e1705 wit 2gb or ram and i got xp pro i think 32bit. And if i upgraded to 4 gb of ram only 3 will work. ORRRR will 3 show up on my comp but in fact 4 is being used?

with 64 bit dont you have to buy all new software etc designed for 64 bit?
i have a 64 bit AMD proc and win XP pro which i think is also 64 bit isnt it. arent you sorry you spoke up now LOL

XP will not see all 4 GB of ram in a 32 bit version.

Yes and no with the software bit...in vista64 you will not have to buy new software...but with xp64, I dont believe it fully supports all 32bit apps. In vista64, it will run them in 32bit and install 32bit programs just fine. Xp pro 64bit will most likely let you install games and the works in 32bit but its going to be hard to find drivers, if it even lets you install....I honestly dont think you should use anything less than vista ultimate 64bit if you are going the 64bit route because more support is offered.

Just because you have an AMD 64 proccessor doesnt mean anything. Just means it supports a 64bit OS. You still require the 64bit OS...which you dont have. It also comes with tons of headaches aswell..so dont recommend going 64bit unless you are fully aware of what you are jumping into.
