Hard drives that are getting noisy over a period of time spells impending failure of the drive. It is the motor within the drive that is slowly wearing out. If at one time the drive was fairly quite and now it is getting noisy, it is on its death bed.

How old is the drive? If it has been steadily getting noisier over a period of time.. it wearing out. If you can replace it, do so before it actually goes belly up. What you can do is get a new drive. With the instructions that come with the new drive, you can set it up so that you can copy the entire contents of your current drive onto the new one. Thus, preserving your computer from impending doom of hard drive failure and losing all of your stuff you currently have on the drive.

Is it in the Dell system? If so, do you know if you have warranty left? Most people buy 3 year warranties on desktops, so if it is, you can get it replaced. Email me your service tag (on a white sticker on the back of the tower) at dan_cassidy@dell.com and I will look into it for you.

if it's always been loud, some drives come with utilities that can be used to make them quieter, but u sacrifice performance.

if it was quieter but is getting louder, like Trahn said, it may be getting ready to fail.

Do you defrag regularly? If it's happening on big apps and such it could be the drive slamming the heads around (otherwise known as disk thrashing) to get the data that's split up over everywhere. Most drives aren't that loud if they are defragged as they are just moving the heads minute amounts, as opposed to those having to move them all the way from the inside to the outside because the drive is fragmented.

Well there is the possiblilty it's antivirus software. That junk generally waits for idle periods to start scanning your files in the background.

REgarding your the noise. Yeah your drive is probably on it's way out. What you are hearing is commonly called "drive thrash". It is normally caused by an extremely fragmented file structure. If you have defragmented your drive and the noise persists, your bearings are going out. Back up your data before it ends up crashing.

edit. ???Junior Member??? Gezz I feel so insignificant. Lt. Dan I need a hug.
